Our Programs
Where creative freedom becomes practice, skill, and leadership.
Radical Reversal builds creative spaces inside detention centers and in historically disinvested neighborhoods. But the studio itself is only the doorway. What happens inside is the work: music, writing, production, storytelling, and the kind of learning that helps people claim their own voice and power.
Our programs are designed and led by justice-impacted teaching artists. Everything we teach is rooted in craft, culture, and lived experience. Every program invites people to create work that is honest, complex, and theirs.
Below is what we offer at our inside/outside studios, and what we’re building next.
PROGRAM OFFERINGS FOR INCARCERATED & JUSTICE-IMPACTED PARTICIPANTS
Music Production
Participants learn the full process of recording, producing, and engineering original music. From beat-building to mixing, the studio becomes a place to sharpen technical skills and develop a creative voice.
The Music Business
We break down how the music economy actually works—publishing, royalties, distribution—so participants can own their work and control how it’s used.
Creative Writing
Writing is a tool for clarity, connection, and self-determination. Participants create short stories, essays, and personal narrative with guidance from teaching artists who understand the stakes and the stories behind the pages.
Poetry
We provide a space for transformation through language. Poetry sessions focus on voice, imagery, rhythm, and craft—but also on truth-telling, memory, and surviving systems that were never built for us.
Digital Storytelling
& Podcasting
Students learn how to script, record, edit, and produce original podcasts and digital stories. These projects become records of memory, truth, and imagination—told by the people living them.
Sound Design
From field recording to Foley to atmospheric scoring, participants learn how sound shapes emotion and perspective—skills that translate to film, music, theater, and digital media.
Programs for Partners, Institutions
& Collaborators
Workshops
& Intensives
We build short-format creative labs for universities, community organizations, and partner sites. We focus on one skill at a time—lyric writing, production fundamentals, storytelling, performance—and deliver the same rigor we bring inside the studios.
Curriculum Design
We build custom curriculum for facilities, schools, and community partners. Every curriculum is shaped by the people closest to the work: practical, culturally rooted, and designed to shift power, not extract it.
Guest Speakers & Masterclasses
Radical Reversal teaching artists, organizers, engineers, and cultural workers lead conversations and demonstrations for classrooms, conferences, and institutions. These sessions ground creative practice in lived experience, craft, and cultural history—not theory.
Consulting
For institutions building or expanding their own creative spaces, we offer guidance grounded in practice: studio design, teaching-artist development, curriculum structure, safety and neutrality standards, and program models that center justice-impacted leadership.
Program Types
Inside Programs
Our inside programs operate within youth and adult detention centers. Inside our studios, creativity is resistance; the programs inside detention centers prioritize safety, expression, and skill building in spaces designed to suppress all three.
Outside Programs
Outside programs live in community—places like Ensley, Birmingham. They create continuity after release and serve the broader neighborhood. These studios bridge systems, generations, and creative communities who rarely share space.
Pilot Programs
Pilot programs begin where a facility or community organizes around creative access and asks us to co-design the work. These short-term installations help us test the space, build relationships, and prepare for a full ICS build.

HOW OUR PROGRAMS WORK
Our approach follows a simple but disciplined process:
Listen
We start with people—the facility, the community, the artists already doing the work.
Co-Design
Nothing is templated. Every program is built with the people closest to the space.
Build
We create studios that are safe, high-quality, and grounded in neutrality and trust.
Teach
Justice-impacted teaching artists lead every session. Culture guides the curriculum.
Connect
Inside & Out
Programs don’t end at the facility door. We build creative continuity across systems.
Stay
We are not a drop-in program. We stay as long as we are wanted and the work has impact.
The Work is Radical. So is the Reversal.
If you’re a facility administrator, educator, community leader, funder, or teaching artist interested in creating a studio or launching a program, we’d love to talk.
